Wayne and Margie Hanson celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary fishing aboard aboard the “Northern Blue II” for black marlin with Capt. Ross Ansell, off the coast of Cairns, Australia, and here is a part of what Wayne has to say.

“First day out fishing, I caught, tagged and released approx. 1150 lbs black marlin, that was 15 ft long with a 66″-70” girth. After a tremendous 2 hours and 20 minutes fight full of leaps, jumps and watery crashes, the fish was successfully released by crew members of the “Northern Blue II on October 19,1998. The fish was between 25 and 28 years old, lives on to reproduce and possibly be caught again some day.

Margie hooked a 400 lbs black marlin, after a brief fight, lost her fish in the heat of the battle… All was not lost though, as she had caught a 24 lb – 39″ Barramundi three days before at Hinchinbrook Island with Captain Steve Jeston. It was a tremendous fighting fish for its size. I, on this trip, much to my surprise, landed 2 Barramundi on one rappala crankbait at the same time (one 18″ and one 20”). An unbelievable double header, stated by the guide; he had only seen this happen one other time in the 17 years of his guiding career.

Truly a trip of a lifetime on our 25th anniversary. Thanks to all the people of Fishing International and the captain and crew of the “Northern Blue II” and Steve Jeston for making our trip unforgettable.” Wayne Hanson, FL.

Gove Peninsula live-aboard

The remote bays of Northern Australia are virtually untouched and alive with fish. Barramundi (a relative of the snook), queen fish, Spanish mackerel trout, red emperor estuary cod, fingermark and a host of other hard fighting fish abound in these seldom fished waters. One of the most exciting programs we have had in years is our new live-aboard vessel, fishing the Gove Peninsula in the northeast corner of Australia’s Northern Territory. Anglers arrive at Gove airport and are transferred to the mothership, a 65 foot A/C vessel accommodating 6 fishermen.

The boat cruises the hundreds of remote islands, cays, reefs and estuaries that are teaming with marine life. It’s fishing that must be experienced to be believed. Catching can be non-stop! Two experienced guides are on hand to make sure of the fishing success, using skiffs with poling platforms to better work the shallow estuary waters. Both fly and lure fishing are productive.
