Fishing Seasons – This chart shows typical fishing times for major sport species of Alaska.

The Alaska Salmon run season begins in May, ends in September. The Chinook (Kings) begin their advance in May, peaking in the June/July months. The middle period sees the Sockeye (Reds), Pinks (Humpys) and Chum (Dogs) take center stage. In August, the Coho (Silvers) appear and continue through September. Some Steelhead arrive in September and October – although regionally sensitive.

Resident freshwater fish such as Rainbow Trout, Grayling, Artic Char, Dolly Vardon, Pike, and Lake Trout are available all year. The big “Trophy” Rainbows are chased during the post spawn of the Silver Salmon in late September.

Halibut fishing is good all year in saltwater, but most outrageous during August and September.

Main Airline ‘Hubs’ – FI has the best lodges in Alaska with nine Freshwater and seven Fresh/Saltwater destinations located in different regions. Access to the fish usually means air travel to a regional “Hub”, mainly Ketchikan, Juneau, or Anchorage, then transfer by local charter air/boat/ground to the Lodge.
