Pesca Maya Fishing Lodge opened its doors on January 1996 and has quickly become one of the Yucatan’s most popular fishing destinations and with good reason. The lodge is located 90 miles south of Cancun in the 1.3 million acre Sian Ka’an (Mayan for “where the sky is born”) Biosphere Reserve. Situated on a long, narrow strip of barrier beach, the lodge is virtually surrounded by water. To the east lies the blue Caribbean and a few hundred yards off shore, the Palancar Barrier Reef which stretches from southern Belize to north of Cancun. On the western side lies the vast “El Rio” system of flats, channels and mangrove. 10 miles to the north is the famed inlet through the barrier beach known locally as the “Boca”. And 4 miles to the south lies the incomparable Ascension Bay. The entire area boasts some of the Caribbean’s greatest flats fishing for bonefish, permit, snook, tarpon and others, as well as reef and offshore fishing (in season).
Rooms: Eight attractive thatched roof cottages, rustic and charmingly decorated, with private bathroom, hot and cold water, cooled by the ocean breeze through its cross-window ventilation in a solitary white sand beach, turquoise waters and a magnificent coral reef at 90 yards from the beach. The Large Palapa is the center of activity: exquisite meals, cold drinks, fly tying and always new fishing stories.
Meals: Meals are home style, with breakfast buffet, do-it-yourself lunch and daily dinner menu. Breakfast – Fruits of the season like melon, watermelon, papaya, pineapple, apple, bananas, etc. Juice: orange, pineapple, apple, etc. Milk, eggs and your choice or pancakes. Box Lunch – Boiled eggs, fruit and 2 sandwich per person. You can choose between tuna, ham, sausage, salami, pastrami or other meats. Dinner – We offer a variety of soups, salads and vegetables; for the main course fish, steak, shrimps, fresh lobster and chicken alternate throughout the week.
Beverages and drinks: They include purified water, sodas, beer, wine on the table and national cocktails like margaritas, screw drivers, vodka tonic, rum & coke, etc. The lodge does not have imported liquors available, if you have one of your preference you can bring the bottle along at no extra charge. Personal attention is the special touch in making your trip a memorable experience. Communications: The lodge has a satellite phone at Pesca Maya, cost per minute is US$5.00; faxes and e-mails can be delivered from the office in Cancun Tuesday and Friday.
How to get to Pesca Maya: You will fly to Cancun, Mexico, planning on arrival between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM Cancun time. Cancun is serviced by numerous domestic carriers including American, Continental, and US Airways, and non stop flights are available from Miami, Dallas, Houston, Newark, Denver, LA and several other cities. Connections from most US cities permit arrivals before 2:00 PM.
Customs and immigration: Upon arrival in Cancun, you will first clear Mexican Immigration, where you will present your passport and have your Tourist Card (which is provided by your international carrier) stamped. You must then fill out a Mexican Customs Declaration Form (Available at counters in the terminal) which you will need to present before departing terminal. Next you will claim your luggage and clear Mexican Customs. As you leave Customs proceed to the arrival lobby.
Transfer to the Lodge: As you exit the Customs area to the arrival lobby, a Pesca Maya representative will meet you and provide transfer to the Lodge. The drive to the Lodge will take about 3 to 3 1/2 hours. Due to the duration of the transfer, Pesca Maya schedules one transfer per day, usually departing Cancun around 1:30 PM. If you are arriving early (11:00 AM for example), you may have to wait for other guests to arrive before making the transfer. If there are other later arrivals that day you will depart Cancun immediately. However guests arriving to Cancun after 2:00 PM, may be charged a special transfer surcharge ($200.00) if the normally scheduled Pesca Maya transfer has already departed for the Lodge. If there are no other arrivals on your arrival day, Pesca Maya will schedule the transfer to your arrival time. The current special transfer surcharge is $200.00 per vehicle trip, divided by the number of late arriving guests.
Upon arriving at the Lodge, you will be greeted by resident manager Brian Jones who will assist with luggage and show you to your cabaña. You will have time to unpack, settle in, and take a swim or even fish from the beach before dinner at 7:00 PM. Both fly and spin fisherman will find in this area some of the world’s greatest flats fishing for bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, barracuda, jacks and others.
Most agree that this area offers the best for the elusive permit on a fly, others call Ascension Bay the Capital for permit. Additionally small tarpons are found in the flats, sometimes in deeper coves and channels. Bonefish, permit and tarpon are here all year round, but tarpon and snook are more abundant in the fall.
“The staff made us feel welcome, more like family than guests. They were terrific. Noel, thank you for all the help and organization. Keep up the good work.” – Jim Berry, CA.
