Bay of Islands – Kingfish Lodge
The lodge mission statement is a simple one: “To operate the best fishing lodge on the coast”.
Salt water fishing has once again become very popular in New Zealand. Situated at the northern end of the island at Whangaroa, the oldest coastal fishing lodge in New Zealand is one of the best. In the late 1920’s the area became famous as one of New Zealand’s most bountiful sportfishing grounds, when Zane Grey found it irresistible in his quest for record breaking gamefish. Besides the mighty marlin, kingfish (yellowtail), snapper, crayfish, scallops, mussels and oysters are available.
Fishing International client J.J. Acosta after returning from the lodge last November stated “The lodge’s chef is very talented and the staff, including the owners, very helpful. I would recommend the lodge to anyone and everyone!!” Various length lodge stays and fishing packages are available. Besides big game fishing and light tackle fishing they have a catamaran, kayaks, and aluminum boats for rock fishing. Also snorkeling, skeet shooting, wild boar hunting and local hiking are available. Other activities in the area are diving, sailing, golfing, day tramping, helicopter rides and swimming with the dolphins.
In all there are 14 fully serviced rooms, comfortably appointed with telephone and television. Each has its own shower and toilet facilities. The rooms have a casual elegance about them, enhanced by decor to match the tranquility of the surroundings, which will be appreciated by the most discerning guest. Each has an extensive view over the cove and are just a few steps away from the water’s edge.
The lodge kitchen is happy to prepare guest’s catch to their requirements. In keeping with the location, the signature menu offers fare native to the area. The oysters are grown in the harbor, and the locally caught crayfish is picked up fresh from the Totara North processing plant at 5pm to be served for dinner at 8pm.
Everything is tuned for the angler.
“Marlin Blue” is a 40ft Don Senior designed fast game fisher that has a top speed of 28 knots and cruising speed of 20. Marlin Blue is well set up for game fishing with outriggers, a live bait tank and chair.
