We became interested in Mango Creek Lodge on Roatan, one of the Bay Islands of Honduras, for its promise of unpressured fishing in a unique Central American location. Then we discovered all the things that Mango Creek has to offer the angler - world class flats fishing, naturally beautiful surroundings, an operation that is focused on the best angling experience, and many other activities to enjoy with family or friends.
The lodge itself is only accessible by boat. The remote location helps anglers maximize the amount of time spent on the water, especially since the flats are as close as 90 seconds by boat. The fishery sees very little pressure and one of Mango Creek's greatest priorities is making sure it stays that way. The owners of Mango Creek have waged a campaign of local environmental education in cooperation with the local community, and as a result fish populations have increased dramatically.
The bonefish here are in good number and good size, with the average around 3-4 pounds and larger fish approaching 8-10 pounds. Anglers have also had great success hooking and landing permit on these clear, productive flats. Tarpon fishing takes place up in the mangrove channels, with sizes in the 15-30 pound range, with 50+ pounders not uncommon.
Accomodations
The Main Lodge is set in the midst of huge trees covered by a jungle canopy. From the water it is invisible; lost and private in the tropical forest. After climbing the steps to the Main Lodge you are greeted by a truly impressive structure. Inside there are high vaulted ceilings, marble floors, hand carved mahogany doors and furniture. Everything was made on the property.
Two rooms in the main lodge are available for overnight accomodations, each with one Queen sized bed and one Single bed. These rooms are good sized and very beautiful - hand carved woods, nice bathrooms, hot water, fully screened with ceiling fans and their own decks in the trees, looking West.
Set on pilings over the water, the cabanas are beautiful and very comfortable. Made with shingled wooden roofs, covered in thatch for decoration, they all have their own private deck with swing chair and hammock. You can literally step from your deck to your boat!
Inside, they are finished with beautiful Honduran hardwood floors, mahogany or cedar shutters and hand carved doors - all are fully screened. Each cabana has a queen bed and a single bed, ceiling fans and reading lights.
Dining
Three very good cooks provide great meals from the kitchen at Mango Creek Lodge. Breakfast is your choice - bacon, eggs, pancakes, fruit, cereal, toast etc. Lunches are provided on the boats if you are fishing, or in the restaurant if you are not. Dinners are set meals and we serve a lot of fresh seafood, including shrimp, lobster, snapper, grouper, wahoo, etc, depending on the catch.
