ake Rotoroa Lodge is a Victorian fishing retreat in an isolated, beautiful, unspoiled location surrounded by a forest fairyland of the Nelson Lakes National Park. Snow capped mountains provide the background. Rotoroa Lodge provides luxurious facilities coupled with old world charm. All guests receive relaxed personal attention.

This is without a doubt one of the South Island's top trout fishing destinations. Some have called it the best brown trout fishery in the world! This is New Zealand's fly fishing at its best with over 26 crystal clear streams to chose from and another 18 reachable by optional helicopter trips. Guides are excellent, friendly and knowledgeable. Novices are most welcome and guides will have them taking fish quickly. Trout are fished by the classic New Zealand method of stalking and spotting.

Other activities include bush walks, canoeing on the lake, rafting scenic rivers, horseback riding, Farm craft visits, golfing, and sightseeing. Some of these activities should be scheduled ahead of time when you make your reservations.

The meals at Lake Rotoroa Lodge feature N.Z.s very finest cuisine served with a Victorian ambience. Superb dishes such as rack of spring minted lamb, fresh Nelson scallops, medallions of wild venison with plum sauce, wild goose with apricot stuffing, honey glazed loin of wild boar all served with fresh vegetables. All dress is very casual. Breakfasts are super. Hamper lunches are prepared for fishermen and for other outing parties.

Suites are decorated and furnished in the elegance of bygone years, however each has its own modern bath. Wonderful 1920s brass beds with feather quilts surrounded by antique furniture. All suites have superb lake and mountain views. Laundry facilities are available.

ake Brunner Lodge stands amongst timeless forests at the edge of New Zealand's Southern Alps. An accommodation house since the West Coast was firs settled in the 1870s. Many rooms have uninterrupted views over the lake while others face the courtyard of mature rhododendrons.

The trout fishery at Lake Brunner Lodge is unique. It offers the angler the challenge of pitting skills against wild trophy brown trout in clear water and spectacular surroundings. There is a private spring creek on the property pus innumerable rivers and streams easily reached by your guides 4WD vehicle. The lodge has been recognized as a leading wild brown trout destination since the turn of the century.

Lake Brunner lodge reflects the interest of the owners attractive Marian van der Goes and her husband Ray Grubb, both keen outdoors people. The walls are hung with antique fishing rods, and paintings of the surrounding areas. Warm wood paneling, bookshelves fitted with books and exquisite turned native timber bowls and pottery, roses from the garden all enhance the feel of the main gathering room. Log fires burn in the hall, dinning and gathering room on cooler days. Guests gather around an informal self-serve bar each evening to discuss the day's fishing before dinner. The dinning room looks out to an expanse of forest fringed lake. All guests are seated at one table. The chef offers an ever changing table d'hotel menu using the best New Zealand mean and fish, classic sauces and fresh produce. Lake Brunner cuisine has received outstanding reviews.

Trophy brown trout: The trout season is open October 1 through April 30. Some rivers are open May through September. Kahawai (cow-eye): Hard fighting salt water fish to 5 lbs. taken from Grey estuary. Fished from boat or shore. 10 fish an hour normal. Spring and summer. Atlantic salmon (salmo solar): Small but steadily increasing run Grey River late January and early February.

New Zealand's Lake Brunner Lodge

The nine Lake Brunner Lodge bedrooms are large, light and airy and simply decorated with furnishings crafted from heart native timbers all of individual design. All have private baths.

There are walking trails from the lodge leading to 100 foot Mitchells Waterfall in the mountains behind. Trails also wind around the lake and through the virgin forests. Mountain bikes and canoes are available. Pursuits for the non fisher include rare bird sanctuaries, visits to wood carvers, crafts people, and local spinners, garden tours, horseback riding, golf and just relaxing.

CEDAR LODGE

edar Lodge lies astride the banks of the Makaroa Rivers in South Island's stunningly beautiful Makaroa Valley. The valley is bounded by the Mt Aspiring World Heritage National Park. In this peaceful, natural setting in the heart of the Southern Alps is New Zealand's most exciting, remote helicopter fishing operation. At Cedar you will be the guests of incorrigible and delightful Dick Fraser and his wife Robyn, a Cordon-Bleu trained chef, assisted by their daughter Julie and husband plus a crew of first class pilot-guides.

Cedar Lodge hosts 8 angling guests a a time in double occupancy deluxe guest quarters, each with private bath and complete with in room tea and coffee makers. There are two rooms on each side of a very large, comfortable gathering and dining area where gourmet meals are served. All accommodations and the gathering room overlook a large sheep paddock and the mountains beyond.

Each morning, as you leisurely finish your hearty New Zealand breakfast, the lodges two helicopter and fixed wing aircraft arrive at the paddock. You are minutes away by air from New Zealand's most remote trout streams. Flights into the mountain valleys are an awesome experience where beech forests, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, glimpses of glaciers and tarns and gin clear streams abound. Wonderful streams like the Dingle Burn, Albert Burn, the Hunter, Wilkin, Young Rivers and others where large rainbows and browns are spotted by your guide then cast to...(no blind casting here). And there is never conflict with other anglers not of your party. At mid day you will pause for a delicious stream-side lunch then continue working up stream, catching trout until the light is low and you meet the helicopter for your return trip to the lodge.

Then it is cocktails prior to one of the lodge's famed gourmet dinners. You are guaranteed to sleep like a baby this night! When you fish at Cedar Lodge you will be in the spiritual company of famous anglers the likes of Ernie Schwiebert, Jack Nicklaus, Doug Swisher,Lefty Kreh, Del Brown, Les Eichhorn, Russell Chatham, Chico Fernandez, and others. As Cedar Lodge has an extremely high return rate, early reservations are strongly suggested to avoid disappointment.

Riverview Lodge

estled on a plateau overlooking the beautiful Hanmer Springs Valley of mountains, rivers and rural farmland, RIVERVIEW LODGE is located 80 miles north of Christchurch on the confluence of the Waiau, Percival and Hanmer Rivers. This wonderful Lodge offers up-market accommodation and cuisine, with brown trout guiding during months of October to April.

A unique Lodge offering five bedrooms, all with private bathrooms, a large lounge with stone log fire, pool room, large outdoor decks, lovely gardens and spectacular views. All of which allow guests to reside in comfort and privacy and to relax.

Extraordinary Fly Fishing

Fly fishing for large Brown Trout in crystal clear mountain streams is done on a daily basis to a variety of locations. With the expertise of your guide's knowledge, the aid of Polaroid glasses, and then your presentation of a selected nymph or dry fly, fishing is both exhilarating and testing. The fish average five pounds, but every year double figured fish are caught. RIVERVIEW LODGE boasts some of the largest Browns in New Zealand.

RIVERVIEW LODGE employ 4-5 experienced guides, all of whom have excellent knowledge of the local rivers. Traveling by vehicle, or helicopter, ensures an exciting day in beautiful remote scenery, and every opportunity to outwit the smart New Zealand Brown Trout to be captured on camera.

RIVERVIEW LODGE adheres to the "Catch and Release" principal.

So Many Other Activities to Offer

The Lodge is also only five miles from Hanmer Springs, a quaint Alpine Village situated around famous thermal hot pools. The non-fisherperson can take "time-out" and be pampered with spas, massages, and beauty treatments.

Numerous other activities are also offered including golf, horse back riding, forest walks, jet boating, rafting, bungie jumping, and shops selling New Zealand products.
