HOTEL PUNTA COLORADA

East Cape, Baja California Sur

Roosterfish Capital of the World

K

nown to anglers around the world as the Roosterfish capital of the world, Hotel Punta Colorada sits perched above the surf overlooking the Sea of Cortez. With miles of untouched white sand beaches for superb swimming, snorkeling, diving and kayaking, Hotel Punta Colorada is one of the few first class fishing resorts you will find in the enchanting Baja Wilderness that is worlds apart from the over commercialized resorts areas found in other Baja locations.

Looking at a map of Baja California, at the lower end of the East Cape, the farthest extending point of land is Punta Arena. This is where billfish, dorado, baitfish and most every other migratory species of warm water game fish that Baja is known for naturally congregate, as they move up and down the Sea of Cortez. The nearest resort to Punta Arena is Punta Colorada, which is approximately 3 miles to the north of Punta Arena. Hotel Punta Colorada features an incredible location right next to the best fishing in all of the Sea of Cortez and the hotel grounds take advantage of this by positioning rooms and dining areas so as to afford sweeping panoramic views of the body of water Jacques Cousteau called the "aquarium of the world."

Imagine stepping out of your hotel room to gaze at the sea below, only to see dozens of 50-pound roosterfish zigzagging in a feeding frenzy in the crystal-clear water, just a short distance offshore. Dozens of other inshore species lie in wait along Punta Colorada's reefs. The hotel is positioned 15 miles closer to the offshore fishing grounds than the other East Cape resorts. A short morning run reaches tackle-busting tuna, bull dorado, and voracious wahoo, Pacific sailfish, as well as striped, blue, and black marlin. If you decide to take a day off from offshore fishing, Punta Colorada offers some of the best surf fishing in Baja. It is common to find anglers dotted along the beaches of Hotel Punta Colorada with their surf rods in hand. Guests can also rent sea kayaks, which are fully equipped with rod holders and paddles, and fish the fertile waters right in front of Hotel Punta Colorada.

The Fishing

The Sea of Cortez, one of the world's most rich and diverse marine environments, is one of the few locales that yield marlin year-round. Besides being a prime spring spawning area for striped marlin up to 200 pounds, Baja's East Cape is a favored location to achieve bill fishing's Grand Slam, adding blue and black marlin (200-1000 pounds) and Pacific sailfish (80-150 pounds) to the mix.

Catch-and-release is strongly encouraged for all billfish. These apex predators comprise the pinnacle of a fragile marine eco-system. Conversely, plentiful species like tuna and dorado (mahi-mahi) reproduce in the millions and make excellent table fare. These pelagic (open ocean) species roam the 1500-7500-foot depths close to shore here. Numerous inshore species add to the incredible variety of marine life in the Sea of Cortez.

We'll provide everything you require to enjoy this sport fishing mecca, including tackle-rigged 28-32 foot cruisers and 23-25 foot super pangas with savvy English-speaking local guides.
