The manual component is a labour intensive "eyeball" counting of fish as they are corralled through a narrow "slot" where one by one they have to swim through. Using a video camera on a 24 hour basis, the night time migration and day time migration are recorded. Then at a later date the film is recalled and viewed in house and fish counted again. This not only allows the night time migration to be counted but it also verifies the day time migration.

Thanks to such a system, daily counts are added up on a weekly basis, which in turn are used by regional managers as an in season management tool. Utilizing historical timing trends and records, in season assumptions can be made about abundances and terminal fisheries can be managed with confidence. If you follow the link below you will be able to see the weekly trends graphed against historical averages. These statistics have not yet had the benefit of video verification so the actual numbers could be higher. An unfortunate aspect is that due to cutbacks in fiscal resources at DFO, counting systems similar to this on many other coastal rivers continue to be shut down. This leaves the fundamental question "How can DFO manage fisheries and conservation objectives if they have no idea how many fish are returning to coastal streams?"
