Murphy's Riverside Lodge

Stamp River, Vancouver Island

Murphy's Riverside Lodge on Vancouver Island

T

his will be our eighth season on the Stamp River. It is the most exciting of all Canadian Rivers to fish during September and October. The river has a truly spectacular fall run of silver (coho) and king (chinook) salmon. Steelhead are also taken, especially in late season. The remarkable thing about the Stamp is that it is sight fishing, where anglers cast to constantly passing schools of salmon. We're talking hot fish here, incredibly strong and fast! It is great fly fishery, however, spinning gear is also very effective. Anglers are moved on the stream by jet boat and fish, two to a guide, fishing either by wading or from the anchored boat, depending on the water. The lodge offers first class accommodations and meals. There is an 18 hole golf course nearby, perfect for an after fishing game.

Huge schools of fish start entering the Stamp River in early September. These fish are primarily Coho and Chinook salmon. Generally the Stamp River gets a return of about 60,000 Coho and 40,000 Chinook in the month of September and early October. Minutes from the lodge you have access to some of the greatest fishing in North America. It is not uncommon to have 2000 fish go by you in a morning. These fish are nickel bright and easily caught with flies or gear. During low flows the best method is Fly fishing with a sink tip and during higher flows, conventional gear works a little better.

Inside the lodge The Stamp River is a major indicator river for the whole west coast of Vancouver Island when it comes to Chinook and Coho Salmon. Fisheries and Oceans Canada make a considerable investment in counting the salmon that come up the river. A viewing/counting platform is installed at Stamp Falls annually, whereby physical counts of each species of salmon are done both manually and automatically. Thanks to such a system, daily counts are added up on a weekly basis, which in turn are used by regional managers as an in season management tool, and give us better information to help you plan your Canada fishing excursion.
