When you visit Loreto, take one of the tours that show a long history, which goes back to 1533. Discovered by accident at the end of 1533, Baja California's history is full of ambition, scientific inquisitiveness, evangelizing vocation, and defiance of Nature. For more than 150 years, it was considered an island and many expeditions reached Loreto looking for the pearls that made it famous from the start.

They all failed before the problems that provisioning, Indian resistance, and pirate attacks caused, until October 25, 1697 Juan Maria Salvatierra established the first permanent settlement by founding the mission of Our Lady of Loreto. This was the outpost of civilization and capital of the territory until 1829, when an earthquake destroyed the city and the capital was changed to La Paz. Nevertheless, it was 150 years more before Loreto was fully integrated to the country's development when its international airport was built and the trans-peninsular highway was paved.
