One of the finest tail water fisheries in the world, the Green River is located below the Flaming Gorge dam in northeastern Utah. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources show a fish population of 8,000 to 20,000 fish per mile,with a fish growth rate of one to two inches per month.The Green has large rainbow and brown trout, 15″ to 20″inches, with 16″ to 18″ being average. It offers year round fishing, each season having its own type of fishing. There are 26 miles of extraordinary fishing water, that has been divided into 3 sections, A, B, and C, as access to the river is very limited. Drift fishing is the only practical way to fish it all.

Getting there: Drive 4 hrs., 202 miles from Salt Lake City (Dinosaur National Monument a good side trip) to Dutch John. Fly to Vernal Utah on Sky West. There is a $50.00 per party each way pick up fee from Vernal.

Flies and tackle: Loaner tackle and waders available for rent. Flies are available from guide. Best to bring your own tackle. 5 to 7 weight 9′ rods with floating lines either weight forward or double taper. Season: All year with prime from mid-March through October.

Style of fishing: Most fishing is done from the drift boats but there are stretches where one can wade.

Boats: McKenzie style drift boats with casting braces fore and aft.

Sections: All sections may be floated. No floating on A section on Friday or Saturday as too many people. B and C sections are less accessible with more brown trout.

Keeping fish: Two fish per day under 12 inches may be kept but catch and released is greatly practiced. Most fish are 17 to 20 inch class browns and rainbows.

Spinning: Spinning is okay. Jigs can be deadly and are available on floats with prior arrangements. Guides can help you learn fly fishing.

Clothing: During summer shorts and T shirts are in order. early and late season call for warm cloth layered to be shed as the day warms. Wet wading is great in summer. Waders for spring, winter, fall. Bring a rain coat, Polaroids, hat. sunscreen, and camera with plenty of film.
