Lodge guests receive first-class accommodations, dine on gourmet cuisine, and experience breathtaking views that exhibit Alaska’s majesty. The trophy-class fishing, exhilarating wildlife and spectacular scenery make Alaska’s 5-star adventure an outdoorsman’s dream and a uniquely relaxing getaway for all.
FRESHWATER FISHING – FLY AND CONVENTIONAL
Freshwater fishing at Alaska’s Boardwalk Lodge – both spin casting and fly fishing – is world-class in nearby rivers, lakes and streams, with easy access to 23 select waterways on breathtaking Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. The Island largest river – The Thorne – is just up the road from the lodge property on Thorne Bay. Your freshwater fishing excursions are typically accessed via Suburban. Although available, the added expense of a fly-out trip is completely unnecessary. Many of these neighboring waters are only fished when Boardwalk Lodge guests venture out, allowing you to cast and catch in solitude.
For the fly fisherman, Boardwalk outfits you with complete top-of-the-line Orvis fly fishing equipment, or you can bring your time-tested favorite fly fishing gear with you. Seasoned fly fishing guides will lead you in pursuit of numerous fish species at the hottest fishing holes.
For conventional equipment, use of the lodge’s premium Lamiglas® rods, Okuma® reels, Orvis® waders and wading boots, and wet weather gear is included in your lodge package. We supply you with a wide range of equipment to fit the conditions and to meet your needs. Yet, while our equipment and tackle is all-inclusive to your stay, you may find helpful information below for packing along the time-tested freshwater fishing gear you just can’t do without.
Hearty Native Steelhead
These are wild steelhead – sea run Ranibow Trout – not hatchery fish. Southeast Alaska’s trophy-class lunkers are typically in the 29-37 inch range on Prince of Wales Island! Peak Steelhead fishing from May 1 through May 31.
Dolly Varden and Cutthroat Trout
Dolly Varden and Cutthroat Trout are plentiful in nearby lakes and streams, providing year-round excitement. Most Cutthroat and Dollies range from 10-21 inches.
Non-stop battles heat up in July with Coho and Sockeye Salmon runs, followed by a sea of Pink and Chum Salmon in August. The vast majority of these fish have never seen an artificial fly or lure, much less taken one. The Coho (Silver) salmon average 12-15 pounds, but can be found weighing in at over 20 pounds. These salmon are most plentiful from late July through September. Pink salmon average 3-5 pounds, with the best fishing in August. Chum salmon fishing is readily available mid-July through August.
SALT WATER FISHING
Alaska’s Boardwalk Lodge is home to trophy-class, saltwater fishing located throughout the deep fjords and emerald-green waters of Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage.
Because of the oceanfront location of the lodge on the Inside Passage, you will enjoy the comforts of fishing in relatively calm waters. This area is comprised of hundreds of islands, protected passages, bays and inlets; and the waters teem with fish and other aquatic life. Even on a windy day, you’ll experience a comparatively small chop and no open ocean swell. Rarely will you fish more than 200 yards from land.
Boardwalk Lodge’s boats are 26- and 27-foot ocean cruisers, specially designed for your comfort and safety. Each is equipped with a heated cabin, flushing private toilet and all required tackle. In addition to being highly knowledgeable about local fishing areas and techniques, your saltwater captains are U.S. Coast Guard licensed, certified in First Aid and CPR.
In addition to their fleet of ocean cruisers and experienced captains, Alaska’s Boardwalk Lodge provides you with top-of-the-line saltwater fishing rods, tackle and bait. These include Lamiglas® and G.Loomis® rods paired with Shimano® or Penn® reels. Lodge staff cleans, fillets or steaks, vacuum packs, freezes and boxes your saltwater fish for your convenient transport home. Smoking your salmon is available at an additional cost.
Everyone from expert anglers to the occasional outdoorsman will thrill to see enormous Humpback whales surfacing, dolphins diving and otters playing in these pristine waters.
